O'Henry's "Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen": A Complete Reading Comprehension Lesson

This resource is a complete lesson with all student materials for comprehending O’Henry’s short story “Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen.” In this lesson, students read “Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen” together and answer comprehension questions as they read. After reading the poem, students illustrate the story in comic book or graphic novel form. This lesson on “Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen” contains literal and inferential questions, as well as a multiple choice, Common Core aligned exit ticket. This lesson can be used with 7th-9th graders and aligns to Common Core Standards RL 7.1, RL 8.1 and RL 9-10.1. This resource DOES NOT contain the text of “Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen.”

Lesson Outline:
1. Do Now: Students reflect on the meaning and importance of traditions.
2. Shared Reading: Students read “Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen” together and answer comprehension questions as they read. An Answer Key is provided.
3. Post Reading Check: Students create an illustration of the key scenes in the story in a comic book or graphic novel format.
4. Exit Ticket: 5 multiple choice questions on “Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen.” An answer key is provided.
